At some schools students will write their home language in red and Standard Australian English in black. To help students focus on the language they use when writing they wear these bracelets. The red bracelet is worn when students write in their home language and they write in SAE when wearing the black bracelet. Another example which shows how teachers can highlight the differences between Aboriginal English and SAE. In many Kimberley classrooms you will find a language tree. It assists with the first step of Awareness on the Code-Switching Stairway. (ie. Highlighting that there are different languages.) |
AuthorThe power of language cannot be underestimated. This is why I am passionate about empowering children to be literate, critical thinkers. I have lived and worked in regional areas and remote communities, and as a result have a keen interest in Aboriginal cultures, languages and Indigenous issues; in particular those related to English as an additional language and dialect.
